The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that, until further notice is provided, employers should continue to use the current version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, even though the form has a March 31, 2016 expiration date.
Employers must complete Form I-9 for all newly hired employees to verify their identity and authorization to work in the United States. Employees must also show certain documents to their employers to prove their identity and authorization to work.
Form I-9 may be completed as soon as the employer has offered the individual a job and the individual has accepted the offer. Each newly hired employee must complete and sign Section 1 of Form I-9 no later than his or her first day of employment.
The version of Form I-9 with the March 31, 2016 expiration date is available on USCIS’s online I-9 resource center.
USCIS has proposed to make changes to Form I-9. Many of the proposed changes are intended to help reduce errors and help employers complete the forms on their computers after they’ve downloaded them from the USCIS website.
The agency stated that it “will provide updated information about the new version of Form I-9 as it becomes available.”
